Long Phuoc tunnels originated from the people digging tunnels to avoid bombs and terrorist raids by the enemy. The movement of the whole people digging secret tunnels was then launched by Long Phuoc commune cadres. In early 1946, Long Phuoc had more than 300m of tunnels running 3-5m deep underground.

During the anti-American war, Long Phuoc tunnels expanded to almost all hamlets in the commune. Long Phuoc soldiers and civilians used the tunnels as a springboard to attack the enemy. The US imperialists had to use planes to drop bombs, artillery shells to plow, tanks, bulldozers and thousands of infantry to attack the tunnels.
